Changes in the Prep Program for ENC 0015 and 0025

The new objectives for the developmental writing courses in Florida require us to adapt our curriculum beginning in the fall of 2011.
The state is advocating a contextualized approach to teaching writing, which necessitates linking written assignments to assigned readings.
Therefore, apart from practicing certain rhetorical modes, we will be assigning summary and reaction papers to articles provided in our texts.
Although students in 0015 will continue to learn grammar and write paragraphs, they must be prepared for the demands of 0025, where they will be expected to write essays and incorporate source material into their own work while avoiding plagiarism. Please note the following important changes for both 0015 and 0025:

1. Students will have two chances (A, B) to pass a scantron test.

2. Students in the first level will be expected to write a PERSUASIVE PARAGRAPH.
This is intended to prepare students for 0025 where they will be required to build an argument, provide an explanation, or address
a research question. Also, when writing arguments, students must acknowledge competing arguments.

3. For both 0015 and 0025, the passing grade for the course will be determined by the following criteria: Writing Portfolio and Journal 30%,
Scantron Quizzes 25%, Lab Software Assignments (Aplia for 0015 and Mywritinglab for 0025) 15%, and the Final Exam 30%.

4. The final exam will consist of two parts: multiple choice questions and a written assignment. EACH PART WILL COUNT AS 15%.

5. In addition to their text The Writer's World, students in 0025 will be buying The Little, Brown Compact Handbook by Jane E.. Aaaron.
Not only will this handbook provide detailed information for MLA citations, it also has additional grammar and punctuation exercises.
Since this handbook is used in ENC 1101 and 1102 for Freshman Composition, it is our intention that students hold unto this handbook until they have
taken all the required English courses for their degree.
.
Students are expected to keep journals where they can react to current events controversial issues. Journal entries should not be graded, but they can serve as springboards for essays or paragraphs. All written assignments must be kept in a portfolio which must be collected by the term's end. Since we do not have the exit exam, the portfolio becomes paramount to determining whether a student is ready for 1101.
