want any adjunctinstructor to overloooverlook the state's mandate regarding essays, research, argument, and citations.
The following excerpts were taken from the Common Core State Standards for Writing Postsecondary Readiness:
"When writing arguments, students must establish a substantive claim, and represent and cite the data, conclusions, and opinions of others, effectively incorporating them into one's own work while avoiding plagiarism" ( WPRCC 13 and 14).
"When writing arguments, students must acknowledge competing arguments or information, defending or qualifying the initial claim as appropriate"(WPRCC16).

Blogs for My Adjuncts: Tell me what you think.
This will be a space for you to ask questions, make suggestions, offer good teaching tips etc. Write on!!!

Some of you have already been affected by the PERT, our new placement test. We now have more 0025 classes than ever before in a fall semester.
Unfortunately, this has resulted in canceling some of our classes (including my own). This is very inconvenient for all of us, and so I have tried to replace 0015 with 0025 in order to maintain the same time/days for the instructors. I expect more changes in the coming week. I suspect that we will see students in 0025 that should be in 0015; unfortuntately, we can do nothing about this. However, we must pursue a strategy to make the administration aware of these errors. If you are teaching 0025, be sure to collect writing samples on the first day and read them as soon as possible. If you question the placement of any student in your class, please make a copy of that student's writing sample and put it in my mailbox. jp

    ChangesChanges in the
The new objectives for the developmental writing courses in Florida require us to adapt our curriculum beginning in the fall of 2011.
The state is advocating a contextualized approach to teaching writing, which necessitates linking written assignments to assigned readings.
Therefore, apart from practicing certain rhetorical modes, we will be assigning summary and reaction papers to articles provided in our texts.
Although students in 0015 will continue to learn grammar and write paragraphs, they must be prepared for the demands of 0025, where they will be expected to write essays and incorporate source material into their own work while avoiding plagiarism. Please note the following important changes for both 0015 and 0025:

    ...
    competing arguments.
Students in the first level who demonstrate the potential to skip 0025 can be encouraged to expand their persuasive paragraph into an essay that argues an opinion or position.

    3.
For example, two reading selections in Evergreen that lend themselves to a persuasive paragraph are "Cell Yell: Thanks for (Not) Sharing" and "The Case for Torture." Before assigning these or any other reading selections, please acquaint students with the reading strategies on pages 533 and 534. Since many of our students are weak readers, we need to guide them closely.
The exit exam has been terminated; however, until the administration decides how and when to replace the exit, we will continue to use the multiple choice section of old exits for one part of our final.

be buying a new booklet called "Avoiding Plagiarism"The Little, Brown Compact Handbook by Linda Stern. This should be very helpfulJane E.. Aaaron.
Not only will this handbook provide detailed information for MLA citations, it also has additional grammar and punctuation exercises.
    Since this handbook is used
in teaching students to summarize, paraphrase,ENC 1101 and quote from outside sources.
To assist students in their research, the librarians are creating a LibGuide

    .

Students are expected to keep journals where they can react to current events controversial issues. Journal entries should not be graded, but they can serve as springboards for essays or paragraphs. All written assignments must be kept in a portfolio which must be collected by the term's end. Since we do not have the exit exam, the portfolio becomes paramount to determining whether a student is ready for 1101.
